Student Review: OSA Artist Talk Series at SAW Gallery – April 29, 4:30–6:00 PM
In a suffused atmosphere filled with people united by their interest in art, this afternoon at the Saw Gallery, three artists shared their creative experiences at an event organized by the Ottawa School of Art.
Christine Fitzgerald is a photographer with an extensive background, devoted to photography developed in the darkroom through distressing, layering, and merging processes. She uses pigments and gum arabic, favoring the analog process over digital. The philosophy behind this choice is the respect and the embracing of imperfection.
Martin Golland is a painter who works on large-scale canvases using oil paints. His abstract landscapes are exceptionally dynamic. His color palette is inspired by the Northern Lights, and his compositions appear complex with great depth of field. These abstract subjects feature textures and gestural painting that emphasize movement, amplified by the use of painted frames and drapery.
Sarah Tompkins, although very young, already has a prolific artistic output ranging from figurative to abstract. The common thread in these diverse works is the human body, shifting from a real dimension to a metaphysical one, defined only by shapes and colors. In her abstract paintings, gesture coexists with the use of marble technique and masking, creating a personal cosmogony based on dreamlike and surrealist elements, dominated by fluid forms and silhouettes standing out between frames.
